International Day of Non Violence
Akshay Bakaya, Dilip Simeon at Aman Trust, Rishi Nanda at St. Stephen’s, Harsh Kapoor at South Asia Citizens Web and I gave the call for the world community to celebrate an International Day of Non Violence. This ahimsa call was subsequently signed by KR Narayanan, Noam Chomsky, Immanuel Wallerstein, Anand Patwardhan, Ramchandra Guha, Neeladri Bhattacharya, Mushirul Hasan, Praful Bidwai, Bharat Bhushan, Teesta Setalvad, Javed Anand, Shirin Ebadi, Romila Thapar and Asma Jehangir among others.
The proposal was subsequently adopted by the Government of India, which petitioned the United Nations to designate 2nd October as the International Day of Non Violence. As the original petitioners we had proposed 30th January [the date of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination] as a more suitable date.
